Giovanni Maria Butteri, first student of Pontormo, then of Bronzino. At the death of these, he became to work with Alessandro Allori, assisting him in his numerous pictorial undertakings. He worked with Allori intensively in Florence, collaborating with him in numerous pictorial cycles like in the some rooms of Palazzo Portinari Salviati (1574-1581) in Via del Corso (with Storie dell'Odissea), at the large Hall of Villa of Poggio a Caiano (Prato) (previously frescoed by Andrea del Sarto, Franciabigio and Pontormo). The works of Giovanni Maria Butteri can be revealed in some "grotesques" in the First Corridor of the West of the Uffizi, in the Church of San Michele Arcangelo of the Badia di Passignano (Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Florence) with the Stories of San Giovanni Gualberto. Under the direction of Alessandro Allori (between 1581 and 1584) , he executed the lunettes with the Deposition, San Domenico resurrected a child, Death of Sant Antonino, Preaching of Saint Vincenzo Ferreri and Christ the gardener, in the large cloister of Santa Maria Novella
Giovanni Maria Butteri performs simple, well-balanced compositions, rich in the description of details, such as the Coronation of Mary (Holy Spirit) and Christ heals the servant of the Centurion (Carmine). Documented again in 1586-1587 for payments on cartons with Stories of Bacchus (Heikamp 1956); in 1590 in those for the second series of the Centaurs (Heikamp 1956); in 1595-98 for tapestries destined for the Cathedral of Como (Geisenheimer 1906). He portrayed famous people of the time such as Bianca Cappello (Arezzo, Casa Vasari), the Duke of Urbino, of Raphael di Lorenzo (Florence, Galleria Ferroni), and many members of the Medici family.
