About the painter
Amongst the brightest names in which Florentine painting of the XVIth century is so rich, Carlo Portelli deserves a special attention. Formed under the strongest influence of Rosso Fiorentino, Agnolo Bronzino and Francesco Salviati, Carlo Portelli, nevertheless, manages to create his own defiant and eccentric style. The discovery of Portelli and the rethinking of this astonishing painter's place in the history of Florentine painting happens at the end of the 70s of the XXth century.
Art historian Roberto Ciabattini provides an excellent analysis of Portelli's historiography, paying a well-deserved tribute to Dra. Laura Speranza:
"… After the critical contributions by Hermann Voss (1920) , Paola Barocchi (1968) , Valentino Pace (1973) , Serena Padovani (1982) , Philippe Costamagna (1989) , Bruno Santi (1989) , and recently by Pierluigi Carofano, who almost completely analyzes his work in an article published in "Apollo" in February 2001 , the current Soprintendenze for Cultural Heritage have also taken action, carrying out a remarkable series of restorations on the large painted altarpieces . ...
But it is to the scholar Laura Speranza that we owe the most sensational discovery involving this painter.
